Upcoming Events at Rock Point Books (December 2009)

Join us for a night of great food as we experience the fruit of the Blackberry Farm. Sam Beall, author of the cookbook and the Farm's chef, will be with us sharing the cookbook's history, recipes, and the story of the farm! Hopefully, he will bring some dishes for us to sample.
About the Cookbook...
Fresh from the farm -- The Blackberry Farm Cookbook is now available. After years of sharing artisanal produce and farm products with their guests and friends, the latest fruit of their labors is finally complete: The Blackberry Farm Cookbook.
Blackberry Farm's premier farm-to-table restaurant blends traditional Appalachian cooking with elevated techniques of New Southern chefs -- the same spirit celebrated in proprietor Sam Beall's new cookbook. Woven among recipes are stories about the history of the region and photographs that capture the character of this magical place. Whether you've visited before or are here for the first time, let The Blackberry Farm Cookbook bring you back to the good life.
About Blackberry Farm...
In 1940, Mrs. Florida Lasier of Chicago snagged her silk stockings on a wild blackberry bramble while exploring the idyllic Smoky Mountain foothills, and Blackberry Farm was born. Thirty-six years later, the Beall family invested their hearts and souls in the same romantic site that became their family home and lifelong passion. Today, one of America's most celebrated intimate luxury hotels beckons discerning guests who aspire to escape modern-day frenzy and slip into a Blackberry state of mind. Situated on a pastoral 4,200-acre estate in the Great Smoky Mountains, Blackberry Farm will show you the many reasons why the 2004 Zagat Survey rated the property as the #1 Small Hotel in America.

Read 20 will be here for another morning of reading. Read 20 is a nonprofit organization that promotes literacy skills for early childhood. For more information about Read 20, check out their website: www.read20.org
Parents, you are invited to bring your children down for FUN FRIDAYS, our reading hour for children of all ages. We will be partnering with organizations such as Read 20, Chattanooga Ballet, Chattanooga Police Department, and more to bring you a fun hour of reading paired with an activity. Whether we color, dance, or meet an animal (turtles, snakes, opossums, etc.), we will have FUN!

The Multicultural Literature Book Club features books written by ethnic-American authors and works in translation, old and new, as decided by the participants. This book club is for all those who enjoy exploring a diversity of cultures through reading and discussion.
In December, the MLBC will discuss A Year in the Merde by Stephen Clarke. Take a self-assured Brit with an eye for the ladies, drop him in the middle of Paris with a tenuous grasp of the language and you have Clarke's alter ego, Paul West, who combines the gaffes of Bridget Jones with the boldness of James Bond in this comedic travel account. Based on Stephen Clarke's own experiences and with names changed to "avoid embarrassment, possible legal action, and to prevent the author's legs being broken by someone in a Yves Saint Laurent suit," A Year in the Merde provides perfect entertainment for Francophiles and Francophobes alike.
Each month's selected title is available at Rock Point Books to participating members at a discount of 10% off of the regular price.
The MLBC meets on the second Wednesday of each month. This book club is open to the public and free to join at any time. For more information about the club or to express your interest in joining, please contact Abbie Tilley at MulticulturalLit@att.net.

Back by popular demand, Miss Janice from the Center of Music for Early Development will be here for a special Christmas morning. Whether you were here or missed her the first time, then here is your opportunity to join in the musical fun!

Emily Grimes will be signing and discussing her photo book, On My Mother's Side, tonight! She also will be displaying some of her large prints from the book.
About the Book:
"In On My Mother's Side, Chicago-based photographer Emily Grimes offers an insider's view of the secluded, tight-knit community in which she was raised. Growing up in the rarified air atop Lookout Mountain, Grimes, her siblings, and their twelve cousins were surrounded by parents and grandparents for whom both the daily cocktail hour and Sunday church services were sacrosanct. Through sensitive and crystalline photographs spanning three decades and four generations, Grimes captures a time and a place where live-in maids ministered to family needs, holiday traditions continued despite divorce and remarriage, and entire lifetimes were lived in one small town."

About the Book...
On Christmas Eve, the three most terrifying words in the English language are "Some Assembly Required!" In Some Assembly Required, Bill Haltom will make the Daddy in your life laugh this Christmas with his latest book. Bill shares a fatherly perspective on the challenges Daddy faces at Christmas time, including balancing the tree, stringing lights on the roof of the house, and helping Santa put together toys that could only be assembled by graduates of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The book is the perfect stocking stuffer for Dad! And while batteries are not included, there is absolutely no assembly required!
About the Author...
Bill Haltom is a father, husband, lawyer and award-winning writer. He is the author of three books and has been a newspaper and magazine humor columnist for over 20 years. He has served as chair of the editorial boards for 4 magazines, including the ABA Journal, the flagship publication of the American Bar Association. A popular speaker, Bill has delivered commencement addresses and has been the featured speaker at conventions, banquets and leadership seminars.

It's a Rock Point Books tradition! Every year, we welcome children to come down and bring their lists to Santa while he reads us some Christmas stories. This year, Ruby Falls told us that Santa is too busy, so they are sending Mrs. Claus. Join us for a morning with Mrs. Claus, her favorite holiday books, and her favorite holiday cookies! (Mrs. Claus will be accepting wish lists to take back to Santa.)

For the fall, the C. S. Lewis Society will discuss each of the four parts of Mere Christianity, one of the most popular introductions to Christian faith ever written. On December 18 at 7:00 pm, the society will meet to discuss part four, Beyond Personality: or First Steps in the Doctorine of the Trinity.
The C. S. Lewis Society of Chattanooga has been in existence for almost 3 years. Their mission is to bring together people in the local area who share a special admiration and love and an active interest in the work of C.S. Lewis. In addition, they hope to sharpen each others' minds and build one another up in the Christian faith through the reading and discussion of the works of C. S. Lewis. Lastly, they work to establish and maintain communication with other Societies which are similarly engaged in promoting the spirit of the life and work of C. S. Lewis.
